Curriculum Vitae  
Dieter Kraus was born in Gütersloh, Germany in 1958. He received the Dipl.-Ing. (B.Sc.) degree from Fachhochschule Bielefeld (University of Applied Sciences), Bielefeld, Germany in 1983 and the Dipl.-Ing. (M.Sc.) and the Dr.-Ing. (Ph.D) degrees from Ruhr University Bochum, Bochum, Germany, in 1987 and 1993, respectively, all in electrical engineering.

From 1973-1977 he was with Telenorma, Bielefeld, Germany as a telecommunication apprentice and technician. In 1987 he attended the NATO SACLANT Undersea Research Centre, La Spezia, Italy as a Summer Research Assistant. From 1987-1992 he was research associate at the Institute of Signal Theory, Department of Electrical Engineering, Ruhr University Bochum, Bochum, Germany and visiting research associate at the ETSI of the Universidad Politecnica Madrid, at the ENSIEG of the Institute Polytechnique de Grenoble and at the CAPS-IST of the Universidade Tecnica de Lisboa. From 1993-2001 he was with the Naval Systems Division at ATLAS ELEKTRONIK GmbH, Bremen, where he was finally head of the Department for Future Minehunting Sonar Concepts and Theoretical Investigations. In 2001, he moved to the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Hochschule Bremen (City University of Applied Sciences), Bremen, Germany, as a Professor for signal processing with application in engineering acoustics.

His main research interests lie in the area of underwater acoustics and sonar engineering, particularly in the design of acoustic transmitter and receiver arrays, data acquisition and signal conditioning techniques, advanced sonar signal and image processing methods, and automatic target recognition systems.
